locating underground leaks

Has anyone ever experienced this. After confirming that there is a leak in a line by pressure testing with water. I then pressure test with air to create a sound so I can use my listening device. Now the line holds pressure & and does not create a sound. Does the air pressure sometimes force the crack in line close so it does not leak anymore. This has happened a few times and is very frustrating in locating the leak. Any ideas would be great.

Underground leaks

Use a combination of water AND air. This will produce a gurgling sound that you will be able to zero in on. If a leak is small enough sometimes just using water will not flow enough to produce a good, detectable sound.

Sometimes debris can block the leak. Its happened to me many times.

The best thing to do is just leave, and come back once it has started to leak again. Ive spent several hours trying to get the leak to start again with no luck. Tell the home owner to check there meter everyday, and once it starts moving again to give you a call. I had one leak take about 2 months to reopen..

Good luck

blocked leak

If you remove your test equiptment and start the system up for a few moments, that sometimes removes the blockage

ok, let me back up. Sorry, i didnt read the complete post. If the leak is on the suction side this works, however, if on the pressure side, sometimes a mighty vac will help debris removal.;)

see if there is a check valve when the valve shuts it will hold pressure more with air then water.
