having purchased the xlt30 and been out on a few trail leak detecting jobs we are not really sure of the different noises we are picking up.
There always seems to be this constant rushing noise coming throu' the headphones and every now and then we would get a plopping noise like water dropping from a hieght onto a puddle. Of course you get airplanes-mowers-people walking about-dogs barking. Thought it would be alot clearer than what it is.
Now thinking of running xlt30 through lap top with sound wave software and static filter to get rid of all unwanted noise, we will still get about by using longer leads from static filter to headphones.
Anyone else finding xlt30 difficult to use as far as filtering goes?

We did that same thing (sound wave software) years ago with the XLT 20. Even gave customer copy as "value added" service.
The answer here is practice. Every one in this business that uses an electronic amplifier has experienced what you've described.
Leaf blowers are the worst!
Anyway, the 30 has great filtering capability by itself. It helps to practice on a known leak. Maybe you can bury a leaking pipe and practice that way. Every leak is unique in the way it sounds based on it's depth, size, etc. Your job is to make it sound like something you recognize as a leak. If you do enough of them, you'll dig up a few dry holes and that will add to your experience of sounds that weren't leaks
